Poll: Vote for the Journal's Dec. 18-29 Athletes of the Week
Happy New Year! The Athletes of the Week poll took a pause during the holiday break, but there were plenty of stellar local performances before and since Christmas, so we've compiled a list of nominees that extends beyond last week's schedule.
The winner of the last Athlete of the Week poll was Red Hook girls basketball player Maddie Clements, who received 20,306 votes.
Voting will be open until 6 p.m. Friday. This week's nominees:
Large-school nominees
Damani DeLoatch, Beacon track and field
The senior won the boys triple jump final with a season-best 44 feet, 5 inches at the Pearl River Holiday Festival last week. He also won the event with a 43'11" at the Section 9 Holiday Classic.
Dillon Arrick, Arlington wrestling
He went 8-0, winning the 124-pound title at the Mid Hudson Tournament and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. Arrick recorded two technical falls and five pins, including one over Ridgefield’s Johnny Carrozza in the final. The senior is 19-0 this season.

Victor Nelson, Poughkeepsie boys basketball
He hit a dramatic three with a second left, from almost 30 feet, that lifted the Pioneers to a 44-41 win over Harrison last Thursday.

Holiday shindig: Lourdes top Arlington in Duane Davis basketball tournament final
Jordyn Jones, Roosevelt track and field
The junior broke her own program record with a long jump of 16 feet, 11 inches to place second at the Section 9 Holiday Classic.
Logan Mohl, John Jay wrestling
The junior returned to wrestling after a year away, went up several weight class from 118 pounds, and excelled in the Mid Hudson Tournament with a second-place finish at 190 pounds.
Raheem Adebola, Ketcham wrestling
The junior, who is a newcomer to the sport, took third place at 285 pounds in the Mid Hudson Tournament last week. In the third-place match, Adebola defeated Ossining's Marlon Wheatley, who had entered as the top-ranked Section 1 wrestler in that weight class.
Mahogany Felix, Poughkeepsie girls basketball
The eighth-grader scored 21 points to lead the Pioneers in a blowout win over East Ramapo.
Ethan Green, Arlington track and field
He won the boys 3,200 meters in 9:27.63 - edging Oceanside's Jason Kerber at 9:28.92 - at the North Shore Invitational at The Armory.
Tyrese Smalls, Poughkeepsie track and field
The sophomore won the boys 300-meter dash (39.62 seconds) at the Pearl River Holiday Festival.
Nia Rencher, Ketcham girls basketball
She had 15 points and 15 rebounds, leading Ketcham to a 39-34 win over the Pingry School (New Jersey) in the semifinals of the KSA Holiday Classic tournament in Florida. The center also had 21 points and 15 rebounds in an earlier win over White Plains.
Small-school nominees
Nasir Snell, Spackenkill boys basketball
The senior tied a career-high with 37 points, leading the Spartans in a 55-45 win over Rhinebeck.
Aidan Ifkovits, New Paltz track and field
The senior dominated the boys weight throw with a toss of 65 feet, more than seven feet ahead of second place, at the Section 9 Holiday Classic.
Gabby Murphy, Marlboro girls basketball
She scored 22 points, including six 3-pointers, for the Dukes in a 55-49 win over Millbrook.
Patrick Faughnan, Lourdes boys basketball
He led the Warriors to three wins, including the final last week in the Duane Davis Memorial tournament and was named MVP. Faughnan had 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in their 61-51 victory over Arlington, winning the tournament for the first time since 2019.

Juliana Juras, Marlboro track and field
She took second in the girls weight throw at 44 feet, 5½ inches at the Section 9 Holiday Classic, the distance qualifying the senior to compete in the Nike Indoor Nationals in March.
Andrew Szostak, Millbrook boys basketball
He had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers in a 70-65 win over Hawthorne Valley.
Cayden Dones, New Paltz boys basketball
The sophomore averaged 25.6 points in three games in the Duane Davis tournament, including scoring 32 in the consolation finale.
Simone Pelish, Lourdes girls basketball
She hit a mid-range jumper with 1.6 seconds left, lifting the Warriors to a 54-53 win over Albany Academy last week.
Matthew Nachamkin, Haldane boys basketball
The senior scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Blue Devils in a win over Chester Academy last Friday. He also had 25 points in a win over Valhalla.
