Poll is open. Cast your vote for North Jersey Student of the Week for May 27-31

The Student of the Week poll is ready for you to vote.

Each week during the school year, we are soliciting nominations from staff and faculty of high schools (sorry parents!) across North Jersey of students who are doing something special in their schools and their communities.

Like our long-running athlete-of-the-week feature that honors athletic achievement, this award seeks to highlight academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, volunteerism and other pursuits that are part of the lives of so many of our young scholars.

The poll typically will launch Monday morning and close at 5 p.m. Thursday. On Friday morning, we will announce the top two vote-getters as students of the week with a short story about each.

If you are a high school administrator/teacher and would like to find out more about the program, please email studentoftheweek@northjersey.com. Again, only school officials can nominate students.

Jylan Dantes, senior, Lodi H.S.

Jylan worked tirelessly on a class ceramics project in which each student was required to make 3-4 tiles.  Jylan made 21 and took immense pride in doing so. The class tile project creates a large ram logo (our school’s mascot).

Tylor Jack, junior, Paterson P-Tech H.S.

Tylor is a proactive member of multiple school organizations and excels in challenging AP and honors classes. Recently, Tylor and his team achieved second place at the Law Day competition in Passaic County House, showcasing their talent in mock trial performances. Additionally, Tylor is a NASA TechRise student challenge awardee, where he's actively involved in engineering an experimental payload set to fly on a NASA-sponsored flight, reaching heights of 70,000 feet this summer. With a strong passion for STEM activities, particularly in computer programming and coding, Tylor embodies dedication, innovation, and academic excellence.

Melanie Mendoza, senior, Ridgefield Memorial H.S.

Melanie is caring, hard-working, dedicated and has a positive attitude.  She was very helpful with tasks in the art room while serving as community service volunteer this year.

Romina Rosas, senior, Ridgefield Memorial H.S.

Romina is kind-hearted and hard-working. She is involved in choir, and is a well-rounded and dedicated student. Romina has also shown that she can overcome challenges within my classroom and has worked through problems in her artwork, without hesitation.

Kaitlyn O'Brien, senior, Ridgefield Memorial H.S.

Kaitlyn is an exceptional student, warm, caring and outgoing. At the end of March I took Kaitlyn and 28 other students skiing at Mountain Creek. One of the students who didn't know how to ski went to the top of the mountain. This student couldn't ski down and was scared. Kaitlyn went to the top of the mountain and guided the student back down; it took 2.5 hours. By the time they got down, they were hungry and sunburned but Kaitlyn's only care was that of her fellow friend.

Juan Hernandez Salazar, junior, Dwight Morrow H.S.

Juan was present during a medical emergency and assisted in securing the scene and alerting the correct personnel to administer first aid.

Stephanie Rojas Gonzalez, senior, Ridgefield Memorial H.S.

Stephanie is bright, motivated, and genuine. She is a true role model for her classmates and constantly works toward achieving her goals. She is sincere and kind and one of the most humble students I've known.

Grace Osmanski, senior, Ridgefield Memorial H.S.

Grace is a strong leader and a talented student. She's motivated and diligent, yet kind and supportive.  I have no doubt she'll achieve everything she sets her sights on because she is bright, determined, and persistent.

Angel De La Guarda, senior, Paterson P-Tech H.S.

Angel is a standout student at Paterson P-Tech High School. Angel is actively involved in school-wide activities, and serving in the student government association, he demonstrates exemplary leadership. He contributes significantly to community-wide STEM events, showcasing a strong commitment to education and outreach. Angel's dedication extends to volunteering at the Paterson Museum and Great Falls National Park, where he engages families and visitors in enriching learning experiences. His passion for STEM education and community engagement is evident in his ability to connect with students and community members of all backgrounds. Angel's commitment to service and education makes him a role model for his peers, embodying the values of leadership and community impact.
