Poll: Which Dade high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Feb. 26)

Miami-Dade County’s top athletes continue to impress as the winter sports of soccer and girls’ basketball reached their conclusions and boys’ basketball and wrestling decided regional champions. Meanwhile, multiple spring sports like baseball and softball are underway.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Miami-Dade County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, March 2, around 10 p.m.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Cosme Salas, Gulliver, boys’ soccer: Salas capped an impressive postseason with a goal on a free kick and an assist to lead the Raiders to a 3-2 win over Orlando Bishop in the Class 4A state championship game. The Raiders won their eighth state title overall and first since 2020.

Kristina Godfrey, Miami Country Day, girls’ basketball: Godfrey totaled 15 points, five assists and six steals in the semifinals before scoring 20 points in the final to help the Spartans win the Class 3A state championship - its eighth since 2014.

Dante Allen, Riviera Prep, boys’ basketball: Allen scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and made the game-winning shot to help the Bulldogs rally from an 18-point deficit and beat Westminster Academy in the Region 4-3A final.

Javi Rosell, Belen Jesuit, boys’ basketball: Rosell scored 21 points to lead the Wolverines to a 70-58 win over Miami Norland and secure the school’s first ever trip to the state final four.

Edan Playa, Somerset Silver Palms, softball: Playa started the season by throwing a 1-hitter and striking out five to lead the Stallions to a win over St. Brendan in a matchup of two of Miami-Dade’s top teams.
