Poll: Which Dade high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Feb. 12)

Miami-Dade County’s top athletes continue to impress as the winter sports playoffs heat up.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Miami-Dade County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 16, around 10 p.m.

You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Matthew Mairena, Miami Palmetto, boys’ basketball: Mairena scored 29 points and hit six three-pointers to lead the Panthers to a 66-64 overtime, upset win over nationally-ranked Columbus to secure the District 16-7A championship. Palmetto became the first team in Florida to beat Columbus this season and first Miami-Dade team to do so in nearly two years.

Jonas Duque, St. Brendan, boys’ basketball: Duque scored 20 points and hit five three-pointers to lead the Sabres to a 76-73 win over Gulliver and the school’s first ever district championship.

Emely Rodriguez, Horeb Christian, girls’ basketball: Rordriguez had 34 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to their second ever regional playoff win and first since 2010 with a 71-35 victory over Merritt Island Christian.

Jordan Bueso, Coral Gables, boys’ soccer: Bueso scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on another to help the Cavaliers upset defending state champion Cypress Bay 3-1 in a regional quarterfinal. The Cavaliers went on to beat Palmetto and advance to the regional finals for the first time since 1981.

Aliyana Henry, True North, girls’ soccer: Henry had two goals and one assist to lead the Titans to their first regional final and a 6-1 win over Belle Glade Glades Day.

Carolina Monterrey, Westminster Christian, girls’ soccer: Monterrey scored the game-winning goal for the Warriors in a 1-0 win over Palmer Trinity in the Region 4-3A semifinals.
