‘Political persecution’: Texas officials react to Donald Trump’s indictment online
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz was among the first Texas officials to weigh in on former President Donald Trump’s Thursday indictment on social media, calling it “utter garbage.”
“The Democrat Party’s hatred for Donald Trump knows no bounds,” Cruz’s tweet reads. “The ‘substance’ of this political persecution is utter garbage. This is completely unprecedented and is a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system.”
Trump, who is seeking election in 2024, was indicted on Thursday, according to multiple reports. He’s accused of paying hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of 2016 election. Trump has denied the allegations. He is the first former president to be charged with a crime.
The potential indictment loomed over a Waco campaign rally on March 25 — Trump’s first rally of his 2024 presidential bid.
On Saturday, his campaign announced a “Texas Elected Leadership Team.” Members include U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, U.S. Rep. Beth Van Duyne, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham and Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas
The Democrat Party’s hatred for Donald Trump knows no bounds. The “substance” of this political persecution is utter garbage.

Gov. Greg Abbott
Weaponization of our courts for political grievances is an abhorrent abuse of power.
The George Soros-supported NYC DA is only furthering the radical liberal agenda to have elections determined at the jury box rather than the ballot box.

U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Amarillo
This is a dark day in American history. President Trump’s only “crime” was MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! These cowardly Democrats HATE Trump and HATE his voters even more. When Trump wins, THESE PEOPLE WILL PAY!!

I can’t believe this is happening in America. President Trump is the GREATEST President I’ve ever seen, but because he fights for YOU, they want him BEHIND BARS! We’ll have the last laugh. President Trump will be BACK in the White House!!

The hateful Deep State wants this country to BURN. Today they didn’t just indict President Trump, they attacked EVERY ONE of his supporters. We’re not going to back down. We will NEVER stop supporting Trump!!

Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth
No one—not even a former President—is above the law. Some justice for his crimes may finally be served. https://t.co/70HmHIYfcH

Former U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores, R-Los Indios
The case against President Trump is a legal disaster and weaponizing the justice system against a political opponent.
The only reason charges are being brought up against President Trump is because he is running for the GOP 2024 presidential nomination.— Mayra Flores (@MayraFlores2022) March 30, 2023
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton
The radical left has consistently weaponized our courts to silence conservative voices. The actions by the Soros-backed Democrat DA in NYC is the latest example of this abuse of power. I stand with President Trump! #Trump
