Boise police shooting results in fatality. Suspect ‘produced a weapon,’ officials say

The Boise Police Department said in a news release Monday night that an adult male wanted for being in violation of his parole was shot and killed by an officer while being taken into custody.

The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. near Fairview Avenue and N. Records Way, in front of a Texas Roadhouse restaurant that sits along Fairview in the parking lot of the Meridian Crossroads mall area.

Boise police officers and Idaho Department of Correction fugitive recovery agents located the man, who had a warrant out for “absconding his parole,” and attempted to apprehend him, according to Ron Winegar, interim Boise police chief. Officers were trying “to remove him from a car when he produced a weapon,” according to the release.

Winegar said the weapon the man had appeared to be a handgun.

One Boise officer “was forced to discharge” his gun and shot the adult male, who died at the scene despite receiving medical aid, the release said.

No civilians were injured, though some witnessed the shooting. Winegar said he did not know why the arrest was being made in the parking lot of a restaurant, which remained open after the shooting.

“I can’t comment on where the best place for an arrest is,” Winegar said. “But when we have a violent or a wanted suspect who is absconding parole, it’s in everybody’s best interest that we get them into custody as quickly as possible for everyone’s safety.”

Winegar said he did not know how long the warrant had been out for the man’s arrest, and also did not say why he was on parole.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was identified. The release said the Ada County Coroner’s Office would ID the adult male after notification of family.

The officer was not injured and will be placed on paid leave, per department policy, according to the release.

The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the shooting will be led by the Garden City Police Department. The release said the Boise Police Department also would conduct an internal investigation, which is BPD policy.

Boise police first tweeted about Monday’s shooting at 5:24 p.m., saying officers were “on scene of an officer involved shooting. ... Drivers are urged to avoid the area.” A tweet about 15 minutes later indicated that the scene was “secure” and more information would be coming.

The parking lot by the restaurant was blocked off with police tape.

Police tape surrounds much of the parking lot behind the Texas Roadhouse restaurant on Fairview Avenue at the Meridian Crossroads mall.

The initial tweet came about 30 minutes after Boise police dispatch confirmed that an “incident” had taken place involving Boise officers.

This is already the second police shooting in the Treasure Valley in January, and both have involved Boise police. The department was involved in three police shootings in 2022.
