Police release name of man fatally shot on Old Chapel Hill Road in Durham

The Durham Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Thursday morning on Old Chapel Hill Road.

Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 3400 block of Old Chapel Hill Road, just north of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the man Thursday night as 43-year-old Samuel Carr of Durham but provided no information about a suspect or other details.

Shootings, total homicides, down in Durham

The context: As of Saturday, 33 people had been shot in Durham this year. That was down from 46 people shot by the same date in 2023 and 49 the year before.

Just four of the people shot this year, not counting Thursday’s victim, died from their injuries. That was down from 12 fatal shootings by the same time last year and six the year before that.

All told, as of Saturday there had been five homicides in Durham this year, down from 14 by the same time in 2023.
