Police: One person dead after a silo collapse at a South Annville Township farm

One person is dead after a silo collapsed at a South Annville Township barn Saturday morning, according to police.

Around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Lebanon County emergency crews and hazmat teams responded to a silo rescue at a barn located in the 900 block of Mount Pleasant Road. Officials said the silo and part of the barn had collapsed.

South Annville Township Police Chief Ben Sutcliffe said it will take several hours for emergency crews to extract the person inside the silo.

"Units arrived and started a search and rescue immediately," he said. "About maybe two hours into it, the gentleman was found inside the silo. He has passed."

The silo was 70 feet tall, with officials saying it was able to hold around 600 tons of material. The silo was completely full at the time of the collapse.

Police did not identify the deceased male Saturday afternoon. Sutcliffe said this is the first silo collapse that he is aware of to happen in South Annville Township in 30 years.

"There's probably at least seven to eight different companies between Lebanon County and Lancaster County," Sutcliffe said about the crews on scene. "Lancaster County set up their building collapse unit; there are several K-9 units here as well."

Sutcliffe said that police do not have a cause Saturday afternoon as to why the silo collapsed.
