Police officer hurt during struggle with suspect
A policeman suffered a serious ankle injury during a struggle with a suspect, police said.
The officer was hurt after responding to a report of a theft from a shop in Southend, Essex at about 15:30 BST on Saturday.
Police said the officer was receiving "treatment and support".
They said a 34-year-old man was in custody.
Essex Police said officers received reports that an individual had left a High Street shop without paying for goods.
Security staff and a member of the public had also allegedly been assaulted, the force said.
"During an ensuing struggle, an officer sustained a serious injury to his ankle," police said.
"He is receiving treatment.
"A 34-year-old man, of no fixed address, remains in custody for questioning on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker."
Chief Inspector Jo Collins added: "My officers frequently place themselves in harm’s way to effectively protect the public and catch suspects.
“This officer is receiving treatment and support, but I would reinforce the message that no emergency service worker deserves to suffer injury while going about their duty.
“Any such incidents will be investigated to the fullest extent.”
