Former Michigan football defensive line coach Greg Scruggs had a blood alcohol content double the legal limit when he was arrested for suspected drunk driving early Saturday morning, court records show.

Scruggs, 33, resigned Thursday, first-year head coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement. Moore said he could not speak on the situation further, "as this is a University matter."

The police report, obtained by the Free Press through the Freedom of Information Act, says Scruggs was at the corner of E. Madison and Main Street at 2:15 a.m. Saturday when an Ann Arbor police officer saw a car stopped at the intersection with its hazard lights on.

According to the report, the officer waited "a couple of minutes" to see what the driver, later identified as Scruggs, would do but the car did not move. When the officer approached the vehicle, Scruggs said he was coming from the Chop House at approximately 11:30 pm.

When asked what he'd done in the more-than 2 hours that had passed, given it was past 2 a.m, Scruggs said he went to Pretzel Bell, but did not have any drinks there. He said he had two drinks at The Chop House.

After the officer pulled Scruggs over in the lot of the Clark gas station, he brought him out of the car, where Scruggs said he could walk to his home from that location. As he spoke the officer "could smell the order of intoxicants coming from his mouth, and Gregory's eyes were bloodshot," according to the police report.

Scruggs underwent field sobriety tests where the officer "observed lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes" in one test and "used arms as balance, swayed, put his right foot back onto the ground, and lifted it back up when I told him to continue the test" in another test, according to the report.

Scruggs was arrested and taken to jail where he first refused to take a breathalyzer, before he later agreed.

The first test was at 3:45 a.m. and received a breath sample of 0.16; the second test five minutes later came back with a breath sample of 0.17, according to the report.

The legal driving limit in the state of Michigan is 0.08.

This is the third time Scruggs has been arrested for an alcohol-related offense, according to police records. He was first arrested for a DUI in 2011 as a senior on Louisville, and was kicked off the team before the Belk Bowl. Two years later, in Oct. 2013, he was arrested for DUI in Washington when he played for the Seattle Seahawks.

Scruggs signed a three-year contract with U-M on Feb. 12; the first year had a base salary of $650,000; the next two years the pay was scheduled to jump to $750,000.

Scruggs was also due a $75,000 signing bonus "within 30-days of signing this agreement and the completion of a successful background," according to a memorandum of understanding.
