Police: Medical issue may have caused fatal I-96 crash in Ingham County

WHEATFIELD TWP. — A Brighton man was killed Wednesday evening in a single-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 96, the Ingham County Sheriff's Office said.

The 61-year-old man was unresponsive when first responders arrived at the scene near Zimmer Road about 7:45 p.m.

Police said a medical issue may have contributed to the crash.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene, southwest of Williamston, after a pickup truck went into the median and struck a tree.

Paramedics provided first aid at the scene before transporting the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff's office said. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Highway traffic was reduced to one lane during the investigation, which continued until 11 p.m. The incident is under investigation by the Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team.
