Police investigating after threat made against Dreher High; football gameday moved

An increased police presence is set to be on-hand at Columbia’s Dreher High School on Friday after officials say a threat was made against the school over social media on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the school’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night has been moved to Saturday morning.

According to Richland One school district spokeswoman Karen York, a threat was made to Dreher Thursday evening during a YouTube livestream of the Dreher-A.C. Flora junior varsity football game. Law enforcement was contacted and is investigating.

York said both the Columbia Police Department and Richland County Sheriff’s Department were contacted in the wake of the threat. The spokeswoman did not describe the nature of the threat.

Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said the department is investigating the source of the threat, and is working with the school district on the matter. She said a “noticeable law enforcement presence” is at the school and security measures are in place.

“Collectively, threats or perceived threats are taken seriously and will not be tolerated,” Timmons said in a statement.

The district spokeswoman said that, out of an abundance of caution, Friday night’s rivalry varsity football game between Dreher and A.C. Flora has been moved to 10 a.m. Saturday. It will be played at Memorial Stadium.
