Police arrest suspect in Austin mass shooting that left one dead

A suspect wanted for murdering a man during a mass shooting in a bustling entertainment district in Texas, which left more than a dozen others injured, has been arrested.

Officers with a fugitive task force took De’ondre White into custody Thursday afternoon on a warrant for the killing of 25-year-old Douglas John Kantor during an eruption of gunfire on Austin’s 6th St. over the weekend, the Travis County District Attorney’s office said in a statement. The 19-year-old suspect was awaiting arraignment Friday on a murder charge at the Killeen City Jail, according to officials.

Prosecutors said they also intend to seek multiple aggravated assault charges against White.

Violence broke out in the 400 block of E. 6th St., an area closed off to vehicles and a popular nightlife destination, around 1 a.m. on June 12. Investigators believe the deadly shooting was sparked by a dispute between two groups of teenagers from Killeen.

Kantor was fatally struck by one of the bullets and died in the hospital less than 24 hours later.

A pair of juveniles, both armed at the time were arrested in the aftermath of the mass shooting, Austin Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon said Tuesday, but ballistics evidence showed that Kantor was killed by a shot from White’s weapon.

“Based on both forensic and eyewitness testimony, we have full confidence that the person responsible for the shooting has been arrested and is no longer a danger to our community,” Garza said. “At this time, we believe that Mr. White was the only shooter.”

Charges against both the teens have been dropped.
