  • Polestar performed an impressive fast charge on a prototype of its upcoming Polestar 5 sedan, bringing the vehicle from 10 to 80 percent in just 10 minutes.

  • The test car was equipped with a 77.0-kWh battery pack and according to the manufacturer, charging speeds rose from 310 kW at the start of the test to over 370 kW at the end.

  • According to Polestar, the specially commissioned 77.0-kWh battery can be increased to at least 100.0 kWh.

The electric-vehicle landscape continues to change rapidly, with automakers seemingly introducing new or updated technology every other week. Polestar is one such EV manufacturer, and it just performed a rather impressive fast charge test on a prototype Polestar 5 sedan.

The fully drivable prototype charged from 10 to 80 percent in a mere 10 minutes—or less time than it'll take you to catch up on your Instagram feed. The prototype car was equipped with a specially commissioned 77.0-kWh battery made by EV battery maker StoreDot. While that's not a huge battery, Polestar says the Extreme Fast Charging or XFC technology can be increased to at least 100.0 kWh.

Aside from the speed, the charge rate throughout the test is equally impressive. According to Polestar, charging speeds started at 310 kW with the battery at 10 percent and rose to just over 370 kW by the time the battery reached 80 percent. Unfortunately, Polestar didn't reveal the average charging rate for the test, which is the figure we'd most like to see.

Jens Groot, Polestar's battery systems chief engineer, claimed that this test was "the first time a complete battery pack has been tested in a fully functioning car, without (and this bit is important) showing the eventual power reduction typically seen during charging."

He added: "This is proof that we can now charge at these speeds in a standard car. We didn't add anything new outside the battery pack. It still had the original cooling pump and fan."

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, noting that time is "one of life's greatest luxuries," claimed that the technology Polestar is testing will be able to reduce drivers' stop time until it is "more akin to what they experience with a [gasoline powered] car today."

The Polestar 5 is expected to arrive as a 2027 model, and it will feature standard all-wheel drive thanks to a dual-motor setup. The automaker claims it is targeting some pretty big power figures, stating 884 horsepower from at least one Polestar 5 trim. There's still no word on pricing or availability for the upcoming sedan. Considering that the just-launched Polestar 3 carries a 2025 model year, we don't expect to see the Polestar 5 anytime soon.
