An Ohio zoo welcomed the births of twin polar bear cubs, and you have the opportunity to view their daily routine before they make their public debut.

The two cubs were born Dec. 1 to their mother Crystal, a 24-year-old polar bear at the Toledo Zoo. Their father is 18-year-old Nuka, who was brought to the zoo in March to begin the mating process.

Nuka came to the Toledo Zoo through the Species Survival Plan, which is designed “to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and demographically stable population for the long-term future.”

A breeding recommendation was previously issued for Crystal, setting up the mating with Nuka. They met for the first time on March 21.

The gender of the cubs is currently unknown, and they are not expected to make their public debut at the zoo until the spring of 2023, the zoo said. It’s the first time the zoo has had twin polar bear cubs since 2012.

But you’ll still have opportunities to watch them in their first few months. The Toledo Zoo has set up a live feed, allowing viewers to peek in the polar bear den. The livestream is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

“The bears are off-exhibit inside their cozy den as it is a quiet, safe place for a mother to give birth and raise cubs,” the zoo said. “In the wild, this would be in a snow bank or side of a hill.”

The livestream shows the tiny cubs resting with their mother, but the babies won’t stay small forever. Male polar bears can weigh between 800 and 1,300 pounds, while female polar bears range in weight from 300 to 700 pounds.

The cubs are the half siblings of Astra and Laerke, a pair of polar bears at the Detroit Zoo.

“Congratulations, Crystal and Nuka, on the arrival of your twin cubs — they are just too cute!” the Detroit Zoo commented on The Toledo Zoo’s Facebook post. “We are excited to watch them grow up big and strong like their half sisters, Astra and Laerke.”
