A work of poetry printed in Georgia Review, a publication of the University of Georgia, was awarded the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the organization announced Monday.

“Tripas,” poems by Brandon Som is “a collection that deeply engages the complexities of the poet’s dual Mexican and Chinese heritage, highlighting the dignity of his family’s working lives creating community rather than conflict,” according to the award’s announcement.

Georgia Review is a literary and cultural journal published at UGA since 1947.

Som, who received a doctorate in literature and creative writing from the University of Southern California, received his master’s degree in poetry from the University of Pittsburgh. The prize carries an award of $15,000 for the poet.

In previous years, he won other awards for his poetry including the Kate Tufts Award and the Snowbound Prize.

In the Pulitzer Prize winning poetry, Som celebrates his Chicana grandmother, who worked on the assembly line at Motorola, and his Chinese American father and grandparents who ran a family-owned store, according to the announcement.
