As the weather creeps into 60- and 70-degree days and the sun replaces the gloom and haze of winter, it’s an indicator that summer is on the horizon. For me, summer means endless beach days lazing in the sun (wearing my favorite sunscreen, of course) and sailing adventures—all while wearing cute swimsuits, statement sunglasses, and fun coverups. Admittedly, though, summer was a source of stress for me. As the days got hotter, instead of taking clothes off, I would put more on to hide my body. Yes, even as a plus-size model. Unfortunately, I’m not alone. This is a real fear for many plus-size women—but one I’ve been able to break. Kelly Augustine, a plus-size influencer and inclusive stylist who has worked with some of your favorite curvy women, including Danielle Brooks and Michelle Buteau, shares, “I always lead with asking clients, ‘What are the parts of your body you love to play up?’ instead of ‘Are you insecure about any parts?’ because that leads with positive loving, energy.”

To help shift my relationship with my body, I shifted what I saw on my social media feed to include women who looked like me and, as Kelly suggested, being more mindful of the way I spoke to myself about myself. Social media has been a huge part of my body positivity and neutrality journey. I am happy to report that not only did this suit fit me, but it was also flattering and comfortable. I smiled, I freaking smiled while trying on a bathing suit, even without a tan, I smiled while trying on a bathing suit.

The cut and style of this suit made me feel like my old butt-kicking self for the first time in 3 years. And, when I mentioned to my husband, while we sat on the beach, that I was a little unsure about wearing this suit because of how my body has changed and that it was such a ‘cool’ cut, he told me that not only did he love it but that he actually caught multiple men checking me out (apparently one even got a talking to from his wife). Don’t get me wrong, all I need to know is that my husband still thinks I am a babe and he tells me that all the time, but I would be lying if I said that didn’t give me a little bit of a boost.

The only cons for this suit that I should mention is that the different layers of materials (there is the fishnet overlay, a mesh panel on the bottoms, and then the main swimsuit material) are not all the same shade of pink. It’s minor, but it did kind of bug me when I opened the suit, and it is ultimately why I dropped a star. The only other thing you likely have thought about yourself is to make sure you apply sunscreen where the fishnet mesh is, or you may have the weirdest tan line ever. Ultimately, if you are on the fence about this suit, just do it!”

In addition to its size inclusiveness, the design around the waist and bra band is super cute but still adult. “The material looks like it may not be as supportive when wet,” warns Muhumaza, so you may be best off wearing this poolside or tanning.

When I feel fully supported, I am not fidgeting with my suit, and I can enjoy my vacation and swim with no worries,” says Augustine. Muhumaza adds, “I love colors, so anything that offers color and chic design makes me feel confident!” Chiwaya reveals that her ideal combination is “cute and supported.”

How to Shop for Plus-Size Swimwear Online

Shopping online for something like a swimsuit isn’t always easy. While Amazon has two-day shipping and easy returns, it’s still annoying when you have to send something back or order at the last minute and don’t have the time to return an item and re-order in another style or size. Personally, I recommend ordering your swimsuit in two sizes so you can find the perfect fit and return the other one immediately (so it doesn’t just sit in your room past the return date). If your pockets aren’t set up to order one swimsuit in two sizes, Chiwaya offers this solution: “If you are between two sizes and unsure, I recommend erring on the larger size. For the most part, it is better to have something slightly loose than too tight and squeezing.”

The first thing Augustine does is check the reviews (bonus points for reviews with photos!). “Search to see if some of your favorite swim brands have Amazon storefronts. Also, know your measurements,” she says. Knowing your measurements helps you to choose the correct size for your body. Chiwaya advises to “always check the size chart” and adds, “There is no such thing as standardized sizing when it comes to women’s clothing, and I feel like that is doubly true for swimwear.” For Muhumaza, it’s personal. “Stay true to your style, but also don’t be afraid to branch out,” she says before adding, “Explore new options and try new things!”
