PlayStation Plus' Extra and Premium free games for July 2023 have been announced, so let's run through them before they drop on the service on Tuesday, July 18.

As a reminder, PS Plus is a three-tiered system. Extra is the mid-tier that unlocks a large library of PS5 and PS4 titles to download, while Premium is the high-tier that adds classic games and cloud streaming options to a large selection of the library (Essential's July freebies are already available).

This month is a bit lighter on huge names than previous ones but there are still some notable titles, such as Extra's lead July freebie: It Takes Two (PS5/PS4).

The 2021 Game of the Year winner at The Game Awards is played completely in co-op, either online or in-person, casting players as a bickering married couple who are turned into dolls. Across its 12 or so hours, the game throws numerous types of gameplay modes and mechanics at players, and there's a scene with an elephant that will make you cry.

Even better, a friend who is only on the base Essential tier can grab the Friend's Pass and play the entire game with you, at no extra cost!

Sniper Elite 5 (PS5/PS4) is another big name, giving players a big sandbox in which to plan and execute their long-range kills, while Undertale (PS4) is an absolute critical darling for its innovative twists on RPG mechanics and highly memorable characters.

Zombie survival game World War Z (PS5/PS4) has been consistently popular, and its addition to Plus will only make it more so. Samurai Warriors 5 (PS4) and Dynasty Warriors 9 (PS4) both try and take the classic over-the-top Warriors formula in new directions, although the latter is a bit contentious amongst fans for various changes, including the replacement of all the English voice actors.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated (PS4) is a well-received remaster of a fan-favourite collectathon platform that's especially loved by speedrunners, while Snowrunner (PS5/PS4) has a load of licensed vehicles for you to drive through treacherous icy conditions.

We've also got action-shooter RPG The Ascent (PS5/PS4), 2D fighter Melty Blood: Type Lumina (PS4), apocalypse survival sim Dysmantle (PS5/PS4), steampunky management sim Circus Electrique (PS4), equine fashion show minigame collection My Little Pony: A Maretime Bay Adventure (PS5/PS4), and Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R (PS5/Ps4) and Monster Jam Steel Titans (PS4) for all you vehicle enthusiasts out there.

All games listed as just for PS4 will still be playable on PS5, and may even perform better. They just don't have native PS5 versions that would make the most out of the newer hardware.

Premium adds PSP space shooter Gravity Crash Portable, and PS1 arena combat duo Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2, which are timed nicely with the release of the Twisted Metal TV series with Anthony Mackie, Will Arnett and Neve Campbell all starring.

These three games are emulated in HD, with save states, a rewind function and (usually) trophy lists for both the separate PS4 and PS5 versions.
