PlayStation Announces New PS5 Slim With Detachable Disc Drive

After months of rumors and speculation (along with some deep discounts), Sony has finally confirmed that a slim version of the PS5 is on the way in a post on the PlayStation website. The new console, which Sony is calling a “new look PS5” rather than any official slim moniker, notably includes a detachable disc drive.

The new slim PS5 looks fairly similar to the old PS5, but seems to be quite a bit slimmer, and has bisected face plates on each side. Sony says that the volume of the console has been reduced by 30%, while the weight has been reduced by up to 24% compared to previous models.

The interesting thing about this particular model is that it comes in two editions, like the old one — a version with a disc drive, and a version without. That doesn’t mean Digital Edition buyers are always bound to the PlayStation Store though, as both models have support for detachable disc drives.

This means that if you have an Digital Edition slim console, you can pay a bit extra for a disc drive add-on and you’ll essentially have a non-digital console. It also seems like you’ll be able to remove the disc drive if you bought the standard edition, so if you’re in a two-PS5 household (or just live close to a friend) you can save a bit of money by just swapping the disc drive between the two consoles as you need it.

As you’d expect, the new PlayStation 5 versions will be entirely compatible with almost all existing accessories, including the DualSense 5 controller, any PS5-compatible headphones, and more. It will also support the upcoming PlayStation Portal, a new handheld from Sony that recently got a name and price.

The new PS5 console will start rolling out in the US sometime this November, with release dates in the rest of the world not yet confirmed. Sony says that once the current PS5 has sold all of its stock, the new console will be the only one available.
