Players to watch in the 2024 high school soccer playoffs

For the first time since 2016, there were no Coastal Bend girls soccer programs to qualify for the Region IV-5A tournament in 2023.

The event, long held at Cabaniss Soccer Field, shifted to the Rio Grande Valley and saw Leander, McAllen, Smithson Valley and McAllen Memorial snare the four spots.

Gregory-Portland had made it every season since 2018 until being upended 3-1 by McAllen Memorial in the regional quarterfinals last season.

This year, the Wildcats again enter the soccer playoffs as the District 29-5A champion — the seventh straight season they've done so — are are looking to return to the regional semifinals.

While Class 5A girls saw their season end shorter than anticipated last spring, the representatives from District 29-4A continued their recent surge, sending two teams to the regional tournament once again.

District champion Calallen, London and Beeville have all shown enough to make a playoff run, and even the fourth place team from the district has typically found success, which Rockport-Fulton will look to do.

On the boys side London and Flour Bluff each repeated as district champions as London looks to return to the regional tournament for the third time since 2021.
