Plan your Kansas City fall fun: Mega-guide to festivals, concerts, comedy, so much more

Three only-one-name-needed names jump out from Kansas City’s arts and entertainment fall schedule — Carmen, Giselle and Lizzo.

The Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Ballet will open their 2022-23 seasons with “Carmen” and “Giselle,” respectively, and hip-hop sensation Lizzo will dominate the T-Mobile Center’s fall concerts (along with the Eagles).

Those three events highlight a varied and busy upcoming arts and entertainment scene. With the pandemic waning, this will be the first fall since 2019 with a full schedule. Some venues and performers still have mask and vaccine guidelines, however.

Labor Day weekend serves as the unofficial fall kickoff, and as always it will be loaded with popular events.

The Kansas City Irish Fest regularly attracts about 80,000, the Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival in Independence about 300,000 and the Kansas City Renaissance Festival about 200,000 (over six weeks). In addition, the Kansas City Air Show, which was held in July last year after being canceled by the pandemic in 2020, has been added to the Labor Day weekend mix.

The Irish Fest will celebrate its 20th anniversary, and SantaCaliGon Days its 50th.

Here is a guide to this fall’s arts and entertainment happenings:

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will perform during the Kansas City Air Show, which will take place Sept. 3-4 at New Century Air Center.
