Here’s how to place a sports bet in Kansas if you live in Missouri
Thursday is the first day you can bet on sports in Kansas, even if you live in Missouri.
Starting at noon, anyone 21 or older can place a bet in Kansas, no matter what state you actually live in.
The new legal landscape means that sports betting will be added to the list of many reasons why Kansas Citians cross back and forth over the state line each day.
Simply stepping foot into Kansas will allow Missourians to participate in the newly legal sports gambling world.
Missourians can bet on apps—in Kansas
The easiest way for Missourians to bet in Kansas is by using an online betting app. Like the casinos, Kansas Lottery spokesperson Cory Thone told The Star that all apps will open at noon.
The apps use geolocation to make sure you’re in a state where sports betting is legal before they let you place a bet. That means you can’t bet on your phone while watching a game at your favorite sports bar in Missouri, but you can place a bet right from your phone as soon as you walk or drive over the state line.
“So when you bring up the app, let’s say FanDuel, it won’t let you place a bet until it is able to locate where you are,” said Christophr Boan, a lead writer with Gambling.com. “If it can’t, or if you are somewhere where betting isn’t legal, it will block you from betting.”
As soon as you cross over into Kansas, you should be able to refresh the app and have the option to bet available.
Boan added that you do not need to be in Kansas in order to collect your earnings on the apps if you win, so you can collect when you’re back at home in Missouri.
The following platforms will be ready for the Sept. 1 launch, according to Betkansas.com spokesperson Jared Kimble:
The Kansas Lottery has added that Barstool Sportsbook is also an option for bettors on launch day.
Missourians can also bet in-person
If you’re a Missouri resident, you can drive to one of the four casinos or sporting arenas in Kansas where legal gambling will take place.
Here are the casinos that will be offering sports betting starting Sept. 1:
Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas
Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane
Boot Hill Casino & Resort near Dodge City
Kansas Crossing Casino & Hotel in Pittsburg
Hollywood Casino and Kansas Star Casino will have an in-person sportsbook open on Sept. 1, while Boot Hill and Kansas Crossing will only have mobile sports betting available through apps at first. The latter two are still working on getting their in-person sportsbooks up and running.
Here are the arenas around Kansas City with sports betting areas:
Children’s Mercy Park
Kansas Speedway
