Fans can help name the Pittsburgh Pirates’ new team dog

On May 1, the Pittsburgh Pirates shared a post on X — formerly known as Twitter — giving fans their first look at the team’s new pup. The post was captioned, “Hello world! I’m your new @Pirates team dog, and I can’t wait to bark at PNC Bark all summer long!…But first, I need a name! Cast your votes!”

Anyone can help the Pittsburgh Pirates pick a name for their team dog. All they need to do is cast a vote for their favorite one. Voters can take their pick from Rookie, Bandit, Homer, and Slugger, all of which will certainly make adorable names for the pup. Per CBS, fans can cast their vote through May 4. Their website asks everyone to check back on May 7 for the winning name.

The best part is that fans can catch a glimpse of the team dog very soon. The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that the canine will be present at the Mental Health Action Game on May 3. Beyond this, the pup will also actively participate in games and community events.

Moreover, the canine engaging with the fans is highly encouraged as it will be beneficial to their socialization. Proper socialization is vital to becoming a service dog, so participating in the events will be part of the dog’s training.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2023 team dog, Bucco, also had the names Rookie and Homer as a potential pick. The pup has since been paired with a local veteran, with the MLB team posting the update on Sept. 5, 2023.
