Will There Be a 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6'? Everything We Know

Pirates of the Caribbean

Hoist the main sails and pack the rum, because we just might be embarking on a sixth swashbuckling journey with the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. While details are still relatively few and far between, there has been plenty of conversation about continuing the pirating saga. Over the past seven years since Dead Men Tell No Tales sailed into theaters, a potential sixth film has weathered a global pandemic, multiple Hollywood strikes and the media frenzy regarding Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial. With that all in the rearview, however, rumors regarding Pirates of the Caribbean 6 have begun to circulate once again.

What has become a blockbuster franchise started as a ride at the Walt Disney amusement parks, before it was adapted into 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The original movie became an instant success, lead by Depp's Oscar-nominated performance as Captain Jack Sparrow. The original cast and crew then returned for back-to-back sequels with Dead Man's Chest and At World's End premiering in 2006 and 2007. The initial trilogy complete, the franchise took a break before returning in 2011 with On Stranger Tides, which boasted a largely new cast and a new director. 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales was a bit of a box office disappointment, and while a sixth movie was originally planned, the diminishing returns and Depp's court cases put the project on hold.

This all brings us to 2024, and the new rumors swirling around Depp and a possible sixth installment in the franchise. Will there be a Pirates of the Caribbean 6? Here's everything we know.

Will there be a Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

While the specifics of when and where are murky, it does seem likely that another Pirates of the Caribbean movie will be made at some point. Both Disney and franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer seem eager to get the series back out of port and on the open water. However, what form that will take seems up for negotiation.

Originally, Johnny Depp and the cast of Dead Men Tell No Tales were slated to begin work on a direct sequel. However, that was stalled due to Depp's trial with Amber Heard and the poor reception to the previous movie. Depp initially said he'd refuse to return due to ill will between himself and Disney, but has seemed more open to a partnership as of late. Bruckheimer also expressed a willingness to have Depp return as well.

Separate from a direct sequel, The Hollywood Reporter announced in 2020 that Margot Robbie and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson were teaming up for a Pirates spinoff. While that project has seemingly stalled a bit, in a 2022 interview, Bruckheimer said that it was still in the works.

In that same interview, Bruckheimer says that Disney is also developing a script for a Pirates movie that stars "a younger cast," which is further along than the Margot Robbie project. It remains unclear, however, if this would be a spinoff or some kind of sequel to the original franchise.

So it seems likely that there will be a sixth Pirates movie, but what form it will take is very up in the air.

Will Johnny Depp return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

It is unclear as to whether Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in future Pirates of the Caribbean movies. While he had initially stated he would not return to the franchise, he has since expressed an openness to returning in the right situation. Whether Disney would like to continue working with Depp, however, remains to be seen. There have also been reports that if Depp returns, it would be in a supporting role rather than a lead one.

Will Margot Robbie be in Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

In 2020, Disney announced that a Pirates spinoff starring Margot Robbie was in the works. Along with Depp's Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush's Captain Barbossa is the only central figure to appear in all five movies. However, Barbossa sacrifices himself for his daughter at the end of the fifth movie, so it seems unlikely he'll return outside of a flashback of some kind. That being said, really anything is possible in the magical world of Pirates of the Caribbean.
