Pink slime, live roaches: reasons these Myrtle Beach businesses receive “B” and “C” scores

Each week food inspections are done to make sure that food safety practices are being performed correctly in restaurants, grocery stores, and other facilities that serve food to the public.

Whether this is a routine inspection or a follow-up inspection the establishment will receive a grade displayed at the entrance to the business.

Retail Food Safety in South Carolina

DHEC inspects approximately 22,000 retail food establishments statewide and issue permits to new facilities prior to opening. Retail food establishments include operations such as restaurants, grocery stores, food trucks, schools, and other institutions. Risk-based inspections are conducted at each establishment in the state annually or quarterly, based on an establishment’s food processes and their compliance history.

  • El Super De Myrtle Beach, a Mexican grocery store located at 4977 Socastee Blvd., Myrtle Beach received a routine inspection on Feb. 7 and scored 69 percent “C” grade. Hand washing was not being done between tasks. Uncooked beef and pork was found thawing in prep sink. Dishes being washed in prep sink were meat was thawing. Containers of food not stored in original containers and no labeling of what they were. A follow-up inspection was performed on Feb. 8 for the violations a 98 percent “A” grade was received.

  • Key West Crazy, a restaurant and bar located at 4492 Waterfront Ave., Little River received a routine inspection on Feb. 8 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. No paper towels or dispenser were found near hand sink. Interior of ice bin has soiled surfaces in corners and along soda lines. Improper food holding temperatures in make top refrigerator, fish 46 degrees, squid 46 degrees, scallops 51 degrees. Observed produce stored in walk-in cooler under condensation leak. A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days.

  • Piggly Wiggly #183, a grocery store located at 122 U.S. 17 N., Surfside Beach received a routine inspection of the Bakery and Deli on Feb. 7 and scored 83 percent “B” grade. Ready to eat foods were prepared and held beyond 24 hours, without any date marking. Deli line - cold prep display case: ham salad, egg salad, tuna salad, pasta salad.Sushi cooler: crab mixture, cut ready to eat sushi fish, opened crab meat.Sandwich cooler: opened garbanzo beans dated 12/29. Observed broken floor and cove tiles. A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days.

  • Scotchman #3225 Shell, a convenience store located at 4101 Postal Way, Myrtle Beach received a routine inspection on Feb. 8 and scored 75 percent “C” grade. Ice dispenser for self-service drinks, observed with mildew/pink slime build up on the deflector plate. Splatter observed on deflector plates at the self-service coffee machines. Spillage observed under the self-service drink machine. Pizza sold by the slice and Stromboli’s observed not marked correctly with date and time. A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days.

  • Surfside Jenny’s, a breakfast spot located at 1013 Glenn’s Bay Rd., Surfside Beach received a routine inspection on Feb. 7 and scored a 78 percent “B” grade. No paper towels available at the hand sink at the cook line. Molding food was observed in the walk-in cooler. A slicer that was stored as clean was found with food debris. Observed ready to eat food was stored beyond 24 hours with no date markings. Live roaches, rodent droppings and several small flies were observed during the inspection. Floor below cook line had grease and grime build-up. A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days.

  • Tavern in Surfside, a bar and restaurant located at 8739 U.S. 17 Bypass, S., Surfside Beach received a routine inspection on Feb. 8 and scored a 80 percent “B” grade. Improper storing of foods in cooler at improper temperature, macaroni and cheese was at 61 degrees, chili at 59 degrees, both of these food items had been made the day before the inspection. Cook line refrigerator had raw chicken at 47 degrees, tomato mixture at 48 degrees. Observed residential pesticide in the facility. The floor below cook line equipment is soiled with grease and grime. A follow-up inspection is to be performed within 10 days.
