Pilot dies in a helicopter crash at Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park, officials say

One person is dead after a helicopter crash at Mammoth Cave National Park, according to park officials.

David Stone, age 69 of Louisville, Tn., was flying from St. Louis to Knoxville when contact was lost with his aircraft on Saturday, park officials said. The park became aware of a potential downed helicopter around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

At approximately 4 p.m. Monday, a search helicopter spotted the crash scene inside the park’s southern boundary. Stone was pronounced dead on scene, according to park officials.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Park officials said the National Park Service and the National Traffic Safety Board are handling the investigation and will be on scene in the next few days.
