There’s a library in Pierce County that will be closed for two weeks.

The Bonney Lake Pierce County Library shut its doors on Sunday, Nov. 13 and will be closed through Sunday, Nov. 27. Crews will make upgrades to the building’s interior “to better serve the growing and changing community,” according to a news release.

Improvements for the library at 18501 90th St. E. are funded by the maintenance and operations levy that voters passed in 2018, said Mary Getchell, marketing and communications director for the Pierce County Library System. This project costs $272,000. The dollar amount of the operations levy was more than $30 million.

Crews will paint the inside of the building and replace the ceiling mural with local artwork. Crews will install new furniture as well as make upgrades to the restrooms and meeting rooms. Light fixtures and ceiling fans will also be updated.

The last time the library received fresh paint was in 2007, Getchell said. The furniture is from the 1990s. The ceiling mural currently displays a variety of characters from story books.

“The mural really lacks representation,” Getchell said.

The Pierce County Library System is working with the local school district and others in the community so those who live there are reflected in the library, Getchell said.

Due dates and hold times for books, movies and other library items will be extended during the closure. The outdoor book drop will remain open for people to return items. E-books, audiobooks and other online services will also remain open.

People can go to other branches such as the Sumner Pierce County Library at 1116 Fryar Ave. to pick up books, movies or other items in the meantime.

“Refreshing the interior of the library will create a more welcoming and comfortable space for people to use free library services, especially during a time when costs are on the rise everywhere,” the news release said.
