James Bond and Mamma Mia! actor Pierce Brosnan has landed his next role in a biopic about boxing champion Prince Naseem Hamed.

The film Giant will chronicle the rise to international stardom for the Sheffield-born boxer, who was as known for his flamboyant entrances as he is for his dominance in the featherweight category.

It will also deal with the rampant racism and Islamophobia that was present in the UK during the era.

Prince Naseem was trained by Irish steel worker-turned-boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, who is who Brosnan will play, while The Crown and Vigil actor Amir El-Masry (pictured above) will play the main role.

Gangs of London and The Rise's Rowan Athale serves as writer and director for the film, while Sylvester Stallone is one of the executive producers.

Stuart Ford, Chairman and CEO of the film's studio AGC, said in a statement: "Since commissioning Rowan to write the brilliant screenplay for Giant several years ago, we've been passionate about bringing this extraordinary story to the big screen.

"Amir and Pierce will make a powerful lead duo. and it's exciting that Zygi [Kamasa] and his team at True Brit, with their outstanding career track record in launching the best of British film to audiences, believe as fervently as we do in Giant's cinematic potential."

Although originally set to film partly in Malta, production will now take place entirely within the UK in order to take advantage of a newly announced Independent Film Tax Credit. Production will kick off at the end of this month in Leeds.

Giant currently does not have a release date.
