Pieces of Neanderthal remains unearthed near Rome

Archeologists in Italy have unearthed the fossilized remains of nine Neanderthals in a secluded cave near Rome.

The discovery took place on Saturday with the Italian Culture Ministry saying that the discovery was “one of the most significant places in the world for the history of the Neanderthals.” A skull of a Neanderthal was previously discovered in that same cave back in 1939.

Some of the recovered remains include skulls and skull fragments along with two teeth. The fossils date back to 100,000 years ago.

Excavations on the cave begun in 2019 and involved an area of it that had not been researched previously.

According to the Associated Press, archaeologists said that the cave preserved the environment from 50,000 years ago. Other fossils from large mammals were found in the same cave and helped provide new information on the area’s climate from millennia ago.
