PIAA swimming: York Suburban quartet ends day with bronze medal

The York Surburban girls' swim team ended the day on a very positive note.

The foursome of Sarah Koller, Brynn Neidigh, Pyta Billet and Chloe Moore teamed up to capture third place in the 200-yard freestyle in Friday’s PIAA Class 2A championships, held at Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University.

They touched in 1:39.37 for the bronze medal, moving up one place from their seed after the preliminaries.

“The IM was a rough spot,” said Koller, a junior who was also 28th in the 200 individual medley (2:19.59). “But I’m very happy with the bronze medal in the relay. It’s my first state medal, and I’m so happy I got to do it with these girls. They push me to be a better swimmer and a better person.”

Billet, a freshman, made the consolation in the 50 freestyle, taking 13th (24.90).

“It’s my first state meet, and it’s definitely a stressful experience,” she said. “I feel like the most stressful part has actually been the warm-ups.

“I’m happy I got to swim at night in the 50 free. My time isn’t where I wanted it to be, but I’m happy to make it to states as a freshman, and I got a medal.”

Moore also swam the 50 freestyle, placing 11th (24.42).

“My 50 free did not go as I expected it to go,” said Moore, a junior. “In the 50 free, if you’re the slightest hair off you’re going to fall a lot. But I got to come back and swim in the ‘B’ final and try again, and not everyone is lucky enough to have that opportunity, so I was able to come back and try again, even though it wasn’t for a medal. I feel good about that time.

“The relay was really great. I have the 100 back and the 400 free relay (Saturday), and now I think my nerves are gone so I’m looking forward to those races.”

Neidigh will compete in diving on Saturday.

“The relay was very exciting,” she said. “Coming in as the fourth seed, we didn’t do the prelim time that we wanted to. That finals time made up for it, though. It was an awesome race.

“I’m hoping to do well in diving but having a medal is a great way to cap off my senior year.”

Chloe Chevaux was 27th in the 200 freestyle (2:01.98) to round out the day for York Suburban.

Susquehannock's Wright 15th in the butterfly

Susquehannock's Tyler Wright finished 15th in the 100 fly at the PIAA Class 2A swimming championships.

It wasn’t quite the swim Tyler Wright had in mind.

But the senior from Susquehannock will take it all the same.

Wright finished 15th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.89.

He was seeded 14th with an entry time of 52.64, and tied for 15th in the preliminaries with Brian Chewning Jr. of Holy Ghost Prep, both posting times of 53.75.

“I wasn’t really happy with my times, but that’s how it goes,” he said. “I was happy to at least get to the night swim. I haven’t qualified in the 100 fly before, so I was super excited. I was hoping to go faster.

“It’s real hard if you don’t hit your taper right, and I hit mine at districts, so it didn’t come together here.”

He will compete in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday.

“I’m hoping to go under a minute,” he said. “I think that will get me into the top of the ‘B’ final. I’d like to get into the ‘A’ final, but we’ll see.

“Depending on the meet, sometimes my fly is better and sometimes it’s the breaststroke. I’m more of a long course swimmer, anyway.

“I left my club team (York YMCA) over the summer so this is the first year I’ve trained with the high school team. I’ve loved it. I’m the captain, and it’s been a fun season. I just loved high school swimming. I love the atmosphere. It’s why I left club, and I’m really glad I did this.”

He will swim next year at Washington College in Maryland, where he plans to major in business administration.

The Susquehannock 200 medley relay of Tyler Burgess, Wright, Isaiah Voss and Jack Hammond placed 23rd (1:44.12).
