Photos: How newspapers around the world covered Queen Elizabeth's death
Queen Elizabeth II was splashed across the front pages of newspapers around the world on Friday, a day after the death of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch at age 96.
Many featured images of the queen later in her life on their covers, while others highlighted a young Elizabeth at the beginning of her 70-year reign.
In the United Kingdom, pictures of a 27-year-old Elizabeth taken at her 1953 coronation at Westminster Abbey were on the cover of four newspapers, including the Guardian.
“Our hearts are broken” read the headline on the cover of the Daily Mail.
In the United States, the queen’s death was above-the-fold news for many of the country’s daily newspapers.
“A pillar of duty and devotion” was the headline on the Washington Post’s front page. “Her reign has ended,” proclaimed USA Today.
Similar headlines dotted newspapers in other parts of the world. “End of an era” read the headline on South Africa’s Cape Times. Austria’s Vorarlberger Nachrichten ran the same headline.
Queen Elizabeth-themed magazine issues will undoubtedly be on newsstands in the coming weeks too. Shortly after her death Thursday, Time magazine released the image of its upcoming cover featuring a vintage photo of Elizabeth in a dark cape alongside a simple cover line: “The Queen.”
Here's how newspapers in Britain and around the world covered Queen Elizabeth’s death.
