Phoenix women pick up largest victory of season at Patriot Classic

Nov. 25—WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Dominating Campbellsville-Harrodsburg in their second game of the Patriot Classic, Cumberland's women picked up their fourth victory of the year, 94-36, Tuesday afternoon.

After dropping a close contest the previous night to Midway, the Phoenix jumped out to an early 10-1 lead, running away with the game before the first quarter ever ended. Alyssa Goehring and Lindsey Freeman combined for 14 points in the period, while Cumberland found themselves ahead 29-8 going into the second.

Harrodsburg had little answer for the Phoenix defense, but played much better defense of their own in the following quarter. Aside from AC Whitehead scoring four points, the Pioneers kept Cumberland in check, allowing only two makes for more than five minutes of action.

After 20 minutes, Cumberland were firmly ahead, leading Harrodsburg 45-21.

The third and fourth quarter offered much of the same, with Cumberland growing their lead even further. Continuing her work off the bench, Alyssa Goehring added in 6 more points in the third quarter, which led all players and helped to propel her to a game-high 17 points.

Dominating the final quarter of the game, the Phoenix allowed just a single shot from the field in the last ten minutes. Maddie Brillhart more than doubled the Pioneers scoring output on her own, as Cumberland outscored their opponents 26-3.

Breaking down the box score does little favors for Harrodsburg, seeing the Phoenix dominate nearly every available stat. Out-rebounding the Pioneers 47-22, Cumberland reigned over the paint with 50 more points than their counterparts, and managed over 60 points off the bench.

Although the Phoenix ran away with a lead, it was not due to keeping the starting five in the full game, as every varsity member saw action and thirteen different players added in points. The 94-36 victory is CU's largest victory of the season and will be the final game of the month of November for Cumberland.

Next up, the Phoenix will host Simmons College of Kentucky on Dec. 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
