Believe it or not, the Philadelphia Phillies are just four games back of the New York Mets for first place in the NL East. The Phillies, as a result, are expected to be buyers ahead of MLB’s July 30 trade deadline.

According to baseball insider Jon Heyman, the Phillies are interested in trading for Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel is currently the closer for the Chicago Cubs, who are without a doubt sellers ahead of the trade deadline.

“Phillies are indeed on Craig Kimbrel who could transform their beleaguered bullpen,” Heyman reported via Twitter. “Lots to talk about with Cubs as they like Andrew Chafin (no runs allowed since May 7) and Ryan Tepera as well.”

Kimbrel is an eight-time All-Star and one of the best closers in baseball. He’d be a significant bullpen upgrade for the Phillies, who are trying to make a run to take over first place in the NL East with the second half of the season underway.

The Chicago Cubs have been involved of plenty of trade rumors already this month. It’s no surprise, either. The Cubs are 48-50 this season and nine games back of first in the NL Central. They’re expected to sell off several assets, with Kimbrel potentially being one of them.

The Phillies make plenty of sense as a trade partner for the Cubs. They don’t play in the same division and aren’t directly competing for a Wild Card spot.

Craig Kimbrel could be on his way to Philly by the end of the month if the Cubs choose to part ways with the eight-time All-Star.
