PGA’s Barbasol Championship in Kentucky back underway as fog, storms produce delays

Weather has become the story again at the Barbasol Championship.

The second round of the PGA Tour’s annual stop in Central Kentucky was thrown into chaos Friday due to several different weather events that forced play to be delayed at Champions at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville.

First, play was delayed for two hours Friday morning due to fog, which limited visibility.

This meant that Friday’s first tee times — scheduled for 6:45 a.m. — were pushed back until 8:45 a.m.

But those golfers who went out as the first players of the day still weren’t able to complete 18 holes before the next delay came.

At 12:20 p.m., the weather horn sounded to suspend play at the Barbasol Championship due to inclement weather in the area. Lightning was spotted near the course, forcing the removal of fans, officials and players from exposed areas of Keene Trace.

Less than 30 minutes later, torrential rain descended upon the course, which jeopardizes the completion of any rounds of golf on Friday.

This weather delay due to lightning and thunderstorms is still ongoing, but play is scheduled to resume at 3:40 p.m.

Leaderboard update

Prior to the second weather delay, first round leader Adam Svensson was continuing his strong play.

After an opening round of 62 (10-under par), Svensson had moved to 14 under with a birdie on the 13th hole just before the weather horn sounded.

Svensson leads by three shots over Frenchman Robin Roussel in second (11 under) and by four shots over two players at 10 under, Mark Hubbard and Yannik Paul.

Most of the players near the top of the leaderboard after the first round went off in the morning on Thursday, and were scheduled for afternoon tee times on Friday.

It remains to be seen how many of those players will get on the course, and how many holes they will complete.

Sunset in Nicholasville is expected to be around 9 p.m. on Friday.

Withdrawals

In addition to Grayson Murray, the 2017 Barbasol Championship winner who withdrew during the first round, three more players — David Drysdale, Matt Every and Ricky Werenski — withdrew during Friday’s second round of the Barbasol Championship.

None of those players were in contention.
