Petoskey girls toss another win onto December; Charlevoix, Alanson boys win

PETOSKEY — Before Tuesday night, you could already mark up the month of December as a solid win for the Petoskey girls basketball team.

On Tuesday night, it got even better.

Petoskey’s girls pulled in a 44-41 overtime victory over visiting Sault Ste. Marie, making for a fourth consecutive win with two games still to be played this week.

Petoskey actually worked out of a deficit after the third when the Sault came out of half with a 16-4 advantage, then it was the Northmen with a 10-4 advantage in the fourth that forced OT in a 37-37 game.

Petoskey then held the Blue Devils to a lone basket and a pair of free throws in the extra period.

NON-CONFERENCE

Charlevoix 67, Manton 28

MANTON — Charlevoix bounced back from its first loss of the season recently in a big way Tuesday night, rolling Manton in a 67-28 final.

Troy Nickel scored a season-high 15 points and added eight rebounds for the Rayders in the victory.

"We started with good energy and got contributions from many players tonight,” Charlevoix coach Anthony Troshak said. “We started the third quarter on a 12-0 run to help set the tone after halftime. We did a better job of defending and blocking-out in the second half. It was a good team victory with multiple guys stepping up."

Also for Charlevoix, Hudson Vollmer scored 15 points, Joe Gaffney had eight points and three steals and Vitale Collins had eight points.

The Rayders (6-1) next head to Cheboygan on Thursday, Dec. 21.

NORTHERN LAKES

Alanson 70, Boyne Falls 34

BOYNE FALLS — Tuesday night didn’t come with an MHSAA record for the Alanson boys basketball team, though it did come as a fourth straight win in a 70-34 final over Boyne Falls.

Donovan Honeysette led the Vikings with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Christian Silveus scored 15 points, two rebounds and two assists.

“The biggest takeaway from tonight was our balance in scoring, we were getting the ball to open teammates when we needed to and converted those opportunities,” Alanson coach Brian Kujawa said. “Boyne Falls has a couple nice players in Matelski and Greenier. They gave us issues on the defensive end tonight. I don't think it's any secret that we can put points up with anyone each night, our focus needs to lie in the defensive intensity we bring to the floor every game.”

Isaac Bowman added nine points and 10 rebounds for Alanson, Owyne Greenier had six points and five rebounds and Troy Johnson had four points, seven assists and three steals.

For Boyne Falls, Keaton Matelski had 20 points and JT Greenier had 12 points.

Boyne Falls (0-5, 0-4 NLC) next hosts Alba on Thursday, Jan. 4, while Alanson (5-1, 3-0 NLC) next welcomes in Petoskey St. Michael on Thursday, Dec. 21.
