For cats, the rest of the top five include:

  • Charlie

  • Stella

  • Ollie

  • Callie

To create the rankings, TrustedHousesitters said it examined its database of more than 50,000 pets. It then divided each one “by popularity, region and pet type” to determine the most common names across the country and within each state.

North Carolina’s favorite dog name, Bella, reigned supreme in a total of six states. Meanwhile, the state shared the top cat name Luna with 14 other states.

On a national scale, “the most common girl pet name in the country is Luna, and the most common boy pet name is Charlie,” TrustedHousesitters wrote in its report, adding that there were some regional differences.

While Texas had many names tied to “ranch and cowboy culture,” Californians most often named their cats after foods. Then there were the states with unique top-ranking dog names, such as Annie in Maine and Maya in Alaska, according to a map posted online.

The results were released after one recent report found Luna was the most popular name for U.S. dogs. Another determined the nation’s pet owners were big fans of Luna, Max and Oliver, McClatchy News reported.
