Peso Pluma on His Iconic Coachella Performance and Putting 'Mexico on the Map': 'Huge Win for the Culture' (Exclusive)

The Mexican star played a VIP concert celebrating Sony's launch of the Ult Power Sound Series on Tuesday, April 23

It's only uphill from here for Peso Pluma.

Speaking to PEOPLE in light of his partnership with Sony Electronics, the Mexican star opened up about his iconic performance at Coachella and putting regional Mexican music on a global scale.

"It feels really great to continue putting Mexico on the map and showing everyone that this music is global, not just regional anymore," the "Ella Baila Sola" singer, 24, says.

"We are being given platforms that we could never dream of before and showing the world what amazing talent Mexico has to offer, not just with me, but with all of us together this movement has taken the world by surprise."

At Coachella, Peso Pluma took the main stage and put on a grand performance with elaborate set designs and dozens of backup dancers.

"I think a lot of people didn't know what to expect and I love that we took them all by surprise with our creativity and visuals," he says, reflecting on the performance. "I wanted to take fans on a journey, tell a story. Showing them the path from Genesis moving into Éxodo, this was just an introduction to what’s coming next."

He continues, "The amazing thing about Mexican music is that we play all the instruments live so it was important to me to show them the essence of our music and also innovation with the rest of the production. It was really important for me to show the world that Mexico has talent too and that we are proud of our culture."

During his performances, the "La Bebe" singer brought stars like Anitta, Becky G and Eslabon Armado as surprise guests.

"It was really special to have all of the guests come out during weekend one and weekend two because each song is really special to me. It’s part of Peso Pluma's journey and without them it wouldn’t be the same. It's a huge win for the culture but also for music," he says.

"We aren't stopping here, there is so much more, this is only the beginning," he concludes.

On his collaboration with Sony, Peso Pluma says he enjoys using their "high quality products" like the new ULT Power Sound Series. For the Grammy-winner, the speakers sound like "you're right there in the studio with us."

"I keep playing 'Peso Completo' which is my newest single," he says of the music he enjoys playing on the loud speaker. "It's a track that’s part of my upcoming album."

Peso Pluma released Genesis in June 2023 and he'll follow with Éxodo this summer.

In March, he told Rolling Stone that the album will be "more of a direct response to the negative press that seems to surround him."

“[On Génesis] people already saw the good side, the superhero side. But I think this year, they’re going to know a darker side,” he told the outlet. “There’s going to be a lot of things about why we do what we do, and why we sing what we do, why people pit us against each other, why media always look for bad things, why people focus more on the negatives than the positives.”
