Personal tragedies make clear why abortion must stay legal

Why abortion should be legal

Years ago, I owned a beauty salon and once a month I would donate my proceeds to a different charity. One of the charities I supported was Planned Parenthood. On one occasion while doing hair for Planned Parenthood I met two elderly sisters who happened to serve on their board. I asked why they were so involved and they told me their heart rendering story. When they were very young during the Depression, their father had become so depressed from losing his job, he committed suicide. At about the same time, their mother found out she was pregnant with her fourth child. One day the sisters came home from school to find their mother dead from trying to do her own abortion with a coat hanger. They were put in an orphanage, never to see their younger brother again. It is true stories like these that make me realize we need to fight to keep abortion legal, safe and a personal choice.

DeSantis won't fix Florida

The April 14 editorial, "We're heading in the wrong direction; fix it, DeSantis," was aimed at the wrong person. The Post knows that he will not 'fix it.' The editorial should have been directed toward those who have the ability to 'fix it,' the voters of the state of Florida. All they have to do is to avoid voting for Republicans, especially those running for seats in the Florida Legislature.

Biden moves forward on climate

I'm a grandfather who is angry about the lack of action on climate. Many people haven't heard about President Biden's latest gift to our future: a groundbreaking regulation that will reduce greenhouse gas pollution from cars by 56% while improving our air quality. The Environmental Protection Agency has released a new rule regulating tailpipe emissions that will save the country $99 billion and prevent 2,500 deaths by 2050. While the standards have been adjusted to get the support of the auto industry, they will still push the country toward a greener transportation system.

County golf undercuts communities

Re the April 14 article "COVID set county's golf ranges on a new course": The real story is how the Palm Beach County Commission has routinely voted to gut the recreational element from neighborhoods by allowing developers to convert private golf courses to housing. Also, the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department has zero coordination with the county Planning staff in allowing this to happen. The county should not be in the business of constructing subsidized golf courses that compete with private courses. Dozens of neighborhoods have been hollowed out because of this.
