Person climbing George Washington Bridge has been removed, but massive traffic delays remain

The lanes that were closed on the George Washington Bridge after a person climbed one of the towers on the New York side of the bridge have reopened.

A Port Authority Police spokesperson said at 11:36 a.m., someone climbed the tower on the south side of the bridge and Port Authority Police responded to the scene. The unidentified person was removed by the police and was taken to a hospital.

Before the situation was resolved, the lane next to the south sidewalk was closed because of the police activity.

Despite the situation being cleared up, traffic is still snarled going northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike onto the George Washington Bridge. Interchange 18W to the bridge via the express lanes is backed up two hours while local lanes are backed up one hour and 23 minutes.

The George Washington Bridge X account, formerly Twitter, advises: "All traffic to NY seek alternate route."
