Perry’s Nehring wins opening race, soccer eyes first wins

The Jayettes and Bluejays were back in action ahead of Easter weekend.

Girls Track

Perry’s girls hosted their annual meet on March 28, taking fourth among the four team spread, highlighted by a couple of top-two performers.

A newcomer, Treasure Moore ran 13.79 seconds in the 100-meter dash for second place. She was all of .06 seconds behind first place while .21 seconds ahead of the next-fastest finish. Moore also took fourth place in the 200-meter dash.

Giving the team its biggest boost, Taryn Nehring won the 400-meter dash in a tight race with Nevada’s top middle distance runner. Nehring won with a time of 1:08.28.

Boys Track

Making their outdoor debut for the 2024 season, the Bluejays participated in Earlham’s Early Bird meet on March 28, grabbing a couple of top-five performances.

Improving on his personal best time from last year by two seconds, sophomore Thad Stewart took third place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes 42.63 seconds.

Coming off a state-qualifying turn in the 100-meter dash, Renzo Saenz took fifth place in Earlham at 11.62 seconds. He topped out at 11.37 seconds as a sophomore and ran 11.54 seconds at the state championships.

Girls Soccer (0-2)

Perry’s season opener was followed by a 10-0 loss at ADM on Monday.

The Jayettes conclude their three-game road trip on Thursday at North Polk. The former conference rivals have not missed a state tournament in over a decade. Perry’s first game at home comes April 8 against Atlantic (which opened the season with a 7-0 loss to Glenwood). The Trojans have won the last two meetings. Perry last beat them 2-1 in 2021.

Boys Soccer (0-2)

While the Bluejays were not shutout on the scoreboard, the team is still looking for the win column after the first three games of the season.

Kicking off 2024 with a tournament at Mediacom Stadium, Perry fell by scores of 4-1 and 6-1 to Des Moines Hoover and Des Moines North, respectively. Sergio Sanchez and Jonatan Banuelos were the two to find the board for the Jays.

Jonathan Barrios-Munoz was the next teammate to make a shot, coming Monday in the team’s home opener against ADM. But with the score tied at 1-1 after regulation, the Tigers broke through with a 2-1 to leave the Bluejays reeling from their third loss.

Perry stays at home Thursday to take on North Polk, a team Perry beat 4-0 last year.
