Perfect score for Braddock cross-country at Junior OB. Belen, Lourdes runners shine. Plus more.

Braddock’s cross-country teams swept the championships of the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

Braddock’s girls made history, timing five runners in the top six to win the team title with a perfect score of 15 points. Riviera Prep’s Sabrina Martinez was third, but she ran as an individual, no team scoring points.

Braddock coach Alex Shaw proudly said: “Junior Orange Bowl was the first ever ‘Perfect Score’ in program history.”

Junior Annabella Cardona led the Bulldogs by winning the individual title in 19 minutes 28.33 seconds, which was more than 16 seconds ahead of teammate Jada Garcia (2nd in 19:44.78).

Braddock junior Andres Canas won the boys’ individual title after running 16:56.35. He also finished more than 16 seconds faster than teammate Michael Gongora (2nd in 17:12.95).

The Bulldogs boys placed five runners in the top seven to secure that team title, too, with 18 points.

Belen, Lourdes excel at Flrunners.com Inv

The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won the 23rd-annual Flrunners.com Invitational at Lakeland’s Holloway Park.

The win marks the 11th time Belen has won the Flrunners.com Invitational.

The Wolverines scored 23 points in the Boys’ Race of Champions, a field that included eight selected teams.

Belen was led by Joshua Ruiz, a junior who finished second overall in the 5K race in 15 minutes 49 seconds. Teammate Joseph Socarras, a sophomore, finished third at 16:04.

Belen runners also placed fifth through ninth: Evan Torres (5th, 16:09), Joseph Ruiz (6th, 16:22), Alec Torrecilla (7th, 16:25), Matthew Calero (8th, 16:35), Diego Magarino (9th, 16:41).

Henry Stark, a junior at Palmer Trinity, was 16th at 17:08. Senior teammate Eduardo Del Rosal was 21st at 17:32. The Falcons were fifth.

Following the event in Lakeland, on its return home Belen stopped in Fort Myers to drop off hurricane relief supplies and lend a helping hand.

That race concluded the regular season where the Wolverines won seven big meets. They race this week in Miami at Larry & Penny Thompson Park for the district championship. Belen cross-country has won 40 district titles, including 18 consecutive.

The team is now ranked by Dyestat as 11th in the country, the highest ranking of any team in school history and one of the highest in state history.

In the Girls’ Race of Champions, Lourdes senior Olivia Fraga finished first in 19:05. Sophomore teammate Olivia Rodriguez was ninth in 20:32. They helped Lourdes place second. Palmer Trinity was third.

Lourdes sophomore Lucia Castillo-Rios was 11th at 20:58, followed by freshman teammate Kylie Fernandez at 12th in 21:00. Palmer Trinity junior Daniella Perez-Cartaya was 18th at 21:23, and junior teammate Cailyn Sullivan 20th in 21:46. Lourdes junior Andrea Comas-Sanchez was 14th in 21:17.

Alejandro Isaza recorded 2 touchdowns, and Sylus Villanueva added 1 touchdown. The defense notched its 4th shutout of the season. Also, Ryan Gonzalez returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. ACC (6-1), Berean Christian (1-6).

In the second quarter Luis Lugo scored on an interception return, and in the fourth quarter Pablo Pena did the same. Marco Netto converted both PATs. The defense stopped two Westland Hialeah 2-point conversion attempts to seal the win.

True North 34, Somerset Silver Palms 33: In the first 3 minutes of the game, the Titans trained 13-0. They dug themselves out of the hole, showing great tenacity and grit in the come-from-behind victory. Behind 27-20, True North outscored the Stallions 14-6 in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.
