Peoria road conditions, closings: Snowy weather hampers morning commute

The National Weather Service predicted plenty of snow would fall overnight into Tuesday morning and Mother nature did not disappoint.

Here's a look at road conditions and closures around the Peoria area and IDOT roads:

Weather in Peoria: Significant snow forecast across Illinois today

Peoria Illinois road conditions Jan. 9, 2024

According the NWS road conditions monitor, the majority of Peoria County roads are mostly covered with ice or snow.

As you move northwest into Fulton County near Lewistown, the roads are currently covered with ice or snow. Heading east toward Tazewell and Woodford counties, roads are only partly covered with ice or snow.

According to the Peoria Emergency Communications Center, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office has closed Princeville-Jubilee road just north of Parks School road for a combined police and fire incident around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday morning. The road recently opened to the public at 9:53 a.m.

IDOT road conditions Jan. 9, 2024

Illinois Department of Transportation Districts 4 and 5 in the Peoria area are currently all clear. There's currently only one district with a road closure and three bridges that are closed. They are:

IDOT road conditions − Bridge Closures

  • Bureau County: Red Covered Bridge-CR 1950 E, 1/2 mile north of IL-26.

  • LaSalle County: US-34 Bridge over Little Indian Creek.

  • Will County: Brandon Road Bridge over the Des Plaines River is closed.

IDOT road conditions − District 8 road closures

  • St. Clair County: IL-161 between Devenshire and Lancer Dr. is closed due to a crash.

Illinois weather conditions near Peoria

According to NWS in Lincoln, Ill., snowfall totals over the next 24 hours will reach 2 to 5 inches around Peoria, but hits as much as 5 to 10 inches in Galesburg.

The NWS suggests three items to keep in your vehicle when traveling during bad weather in case of an emergency:

  • An extra flashlight

  • Food/snacks

  • Water
