People in Vegas Are Tearing Down Film That Blocks View of F1 Race Track
Formula 1 and Las Vegas do not seem to want anyone seeing the upcoming Grand Prix unless they've paid handsomely for the privilege. Earlier this year, F1 reportedly launched a plan to charge businesses with a view of the circuit $50,000 lest barriers be put up blocking the view. And now, as race day approaches, privacy film has been installed on a pedestrian bridge over the circuit, masking the track below. But as one TikToker shows, people in Vegas are having none of it.
As TikTokker jacobslifeinvegas shows in this clip, people have torn off the film. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that this is the pedestrian bridge between the Wynn Las Vegas and the Venetian, a popular spot to take photos of The Sphere. F1 clearly doesn't want people stopping on the pedestrian bridge to watch the race, which to be fair, is standard practice at all sorts of tracks. Still, it comes off as greedy when ticket prices are so high compared with other F1 races, and the circuit's construction has caused major traffic delays for residents and workers in the city.
While this won't be the first time F1 has raced in Las Vegas, this is the inaugural version of a new Grand Prix to take place on city streets. It comes after F1 saw an explosion in popularity in the U.S. thanks largely to the success of Netflix's Drive to Survive. Yet, for all the hype, ticket sales have been slower than expected.
The Review-Journal reports that the screens were installed by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. It's unclear if the film would be reapplied.
