People Are "Horrified" by One Woman's DIY Kitchen Renovation

Like beauty, a home DIY project lies in the eye of the beholder—well, until it's met with an unprecedented amount of vitriol and actual death threats from the internet. Don't believe us? Just ask Breeya Shade. The home decor content creator is DIYing her way to her dream kitchen and recently posted her project's most controversial move yet: Covering her granite countertops with white paint.

"These granite countertops have been the bane of my existence ever since moving in," she explained in her video. "They always look dirty, and you can't ever tell when they've actually been cleaned well enough." While Shade does want to get rid of her granite for good, she explains that replacing countertops can be expensive. So, until she's ready to invest in an upgrade, a few swipes of Rust-Oleum paint and a top coat is a budget-friendly way to try something new.

Shade might love her updated countertops, but it turns out that internet is furious with her decision. "It took the planet millions of years to create that granite and you covered it with paint?" one commenter asked. "I am actually horrified." "How to make $3,000 granite countertops look like $50 countertops," another quipped. A third simply wrote, "Painting granite is psychotic behavior." In fact, a self-described paint specialist commented that there's "no paint that will properly adhere to polished granite."

According to Shade, the less-than-enthusiastic comments are only the tip of the iceberg. "It ended up making millions of people online furious," she said in a follow-up video. "The hate was a little dramatic at times." In fact, she even asked viewers to keep their "death threats" out of her inbox. (Yikes!)

Shade is standing by her decision and, contrary to popular belief, claims that the paint adheres well and hasn't stained. Plus, as she points out, she can always remove it with a scraper or paint stripper if she wants to try something new. Because that's the thing about a DIY project: The only opinion that matters is your own.
