Driver charged with homicide after allegedly striking pedestrian, house in Des Moines

A pedestrian was killed in a car crash late Friday night — Des Moines' first fatal crash of the year involving a pedestrian.

Emergency responders arrived in the 3900 block of 12th Street in Des Moines around 11:53 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department. They found 47-year-old Parreh Ngar of Des Moines critically injured in the street.

Ngar was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Officers believe Ngar was struck by a 2003 Honda Accord, which then left the roadway and struck a house on the east side of the street. The car was driven by Lwin Myint, 52, of Des Moines.

Myint has been charged with homicide by vehicle - OWI, police said in a second news release Saturday. Evidence points to Myint operating under the influence, the release said. He is currently being held at the Polk County jail.

The crash remains under investigation.

This is Des Moines' seventh fatality from a car crash this year.
