Peanut mill fire coming to an end

May 11—After 22 days, the Portales Fire Dept. announced this week that the Hampton Farms peanut mill fire is to a point where there is no need for fire personnel to be there on standby.

The facility on US 70 towards Clovis started burning on April 15. Since then, smoke has remained present with 6 million pounds of peanuts continuing to burn inside the warehouses.

According to a press release from PFD, the Hampton Farms staff agree that the property should be turned over to them.

The News attempted to get in contact with state Fire Marshal's Office about the cause of the fire, but haven't received a response.

The release states that there will continue to be smoke from the plant as the remainder of products completely burn.
