Peaky Blinders' boss Steven Knight set for another Birmingham-based BBC drama

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is lining-up a new Birmingham-based BBC series.

The writer, who is set to release Birmingham-set show This Town next year, is working with the BBC on a separate series focused on a university in the city, Deadline reports, and is aiming to tell more stories from the city and increase local production.

As things stand, the broadcaster is reportedly working on the project with the target of turning it into a full series, though it is yet to get the greenlight and is in the early stages.

Knight is working as lead writer on the show alongside younger writers, and the site reports that it could become a primetime show should it get the go-ahead.

Plot details are thin at the moment, though we do know that it will focus on a group of young people at one of Birmingham's five universities.

Knight, whose Birmingham-set series Peaky Blinders came to an end last year, is currently gearing up for This Town, which follows the formation of a rock band amid the political and social unrest of 1981.

The show packs in impressive cast, which includes Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery, For Life's Nicholas Pinnock and Rogue One's Geraldine James, while music will be provided by Kae Tempest and producer Dan Carey.

Knight also has a busy wider TV slate coming up too, including Netflix's All the Light We Cannot See with Stranger Things' Shawn Levy, as well as The Veil with The Handmaid's Tale's Elisabeth Moss and Disney+'s A Thousand Blows.

On the movies side of things, the writer has provided the screenplay for Maria Callas biopic Maria starring Angelina Jolie, as well as the new Rey Star Wars movie directed by Ms Marvel's Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
