Peaky Blinders boss confirms Cillian Murphy's return for new movie

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed that star Cillian Murphy will be returning for the upcoming movie.

The planned big screen outing for the BBC show has been in the works for a while following the series' conclusion two years ago.

While Murphy's return as Tommy Shelby had yet to be confirmed, Knight has now revealed that the newly-crowned Oscar-winner will be back.

"He definitely is returning for it," he told BirminghamWorld, before announcing that filming will begin "in September just down the road in Digbeth".

Knight also shared his pride at Murphy's recent Academy Award win for Oppenheimer, saying the Best Actor trophy "was so deserved".

"I mean he's brilliant, and he's such a great human being and he leads the line when we're shooting and he's so level headed and straight forward," he added. "He deserves everything he gets."

Murphy himself said earlier this year on Desert Island Discs that he was "totally" open to returning to Peaky Blinders.

"I have always said that if Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer, I’ll be there," he said. "If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, let’s do it."

Speaking at the end of 2023, Knight confirmed he was "working on the final bits" of the movie, adding to Radio Times: "I just sit down at the keyboard and start.

"It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, 'That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?'"

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
