Peacemaker Season 2 Adds MCU Vet Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
Chris Smith has some ‘splaining to do.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced on Friday that Frank Grillo will play Rick Flag Sr. — the dad of the Suicide Squad films’ late Rick Flag Jr. (played by Joel Kinnaman) — in Peacemaker Season 2.
Grillo of course played Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones in multiple Marvel films, and in fact first played/voiced Rick Flag Sr. in the animated Creature Commandos DC series that has yet to premiere on Max. His previous TV credits include Billions, the MMA drama Kingdom, The Gates, Prison Break, the 2002 Lifetime legal drama For the People and Guiding Light.
“Pleased to announce the great Frank Grillo will be reprising the role of Rick Flag, Sr – the role he’ll first play in animated form in Creature Commandos – throughout Season 2 of Peacemaker” Gunn shared on Threads.
Given the events of 2021’s The Suicide Squad, “Christopher Smith and Rick Sr have a little unfinished business to take care of…,” Gunn teased.
Peacemaker Season 2: Everything We Know
Filming on Peacemaker Season 2 kicked off April 14 with a pre-shoot. Despite the initial announcement that Gunn would write and direct every episode, the multitasking filmmaker/studio boss said in March that plans had changed amid his commitment to the feature film Superman: “In the interest of getting the show out there, I won’t be able to direct them all (only some).”
Casting details for Peacemaker‘s sophomore season have been few, outside of this Grillo news and the returns of John Cena in the title role, Jennifer Holland (as Harcourt) and Steve Agee (as Economos). As for Freddie Stroma’s Adrian Chase aka Vigilante, Gunn has said he will “probably” be seen again before Peacemaker Season 2.
As far as a release date, nothing has been announced, but we do know that it will come out after the Viola Davis-led Amanda Waller TV series that was announced in January 2023 as part of Gunn’s new DCU. (The first TV series in that new DCU, though, will be the aforementioned Creature Commandos, due for a late 2024 release.)
Gunn has also said that Peacemaker Season 2 “is coming out after [Superman],” which currently has a theatrical release date of July 11, 2025. He has also confirmed the second season will take place in the new DCU, but has assured fans that it “won’t be confusing.”
