PBS cooking series 'Maria's Portuguese Table' wins 7 Telly Awards

DARTMOUTH – ‘Maria’s Portuguese Table’ - the PBS culinary series created and hosted by Dartmouth resident Maria Lawton - has won big at the 45th Annual Telly Awards.

Dedicated to Portuguese food and travel, the series garnered seven Telly Awards: three Silver Telly Awards in the categories of Reality, Non-Scripted, and Documentary, and four Bronze Telly Awards in the categories of Culture, Travel & Tourism, Food & Beverage, and Entertainment.

“All I can say is HOLY COW!!!,” wrote the Dartmouth resident on her Facebook page, after the Telly Awards were announced on Tuesday. “The first season received 2 Telly’s, and this time we’ve won 7! It’s truly an incredible honor, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported the series."

Receiving more than 12,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states and five continents, the Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens. They are judged by leaders from video platforms, television, streaming networks, and production companies.

“I am humbled and grateful for this recognition,” said Lawton, reflecting on the series’ success and the incredible support behind it.

Maria Lawton films an episode of her PBS show, "Maria's Portuguese Table," at various locations, including the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where work by Azorean artist Domingos Rebelo is on display.

She said the series could have never been possible without the collective work and dedication of so many people.

“A special note of thanks goes to the outstanding production team headed by Dean Camara of Cineasta Digital Productions. Their dedication and expertise have been pivotal in bringing the series to life. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you to all of our major sponsors: BayCoast Bank, RIPBS Foundation, Dunkin', Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture / Tagus Press - UMass Dartmouth, Bensaude Hotels Collection, Visit Azores, and SATA Azores Airlines. Without their generous support, none of this would have been possible,” she added.

Released in 2019 on Rhode Island PBS, ‘Maria’s Portuguese Table’ was the first series dedicated to Portuguese food and travel on American television. Its two seasons have taken viewers on a culinary journey through the rich and vibrant culture of Portugal, exploring its traditions, recipes, and the stories behind them.

Earlier this year, “Maria’s Portuguese Table” won the Taste Award for Best Travel on TV and was also nominated for an Arts/Entertainment Emmy.

The Emmy winners will be revealed at the 47th Boston/New England Emmy® Awards Gala on June 8.
